January 27

Small but mighty! Those sandfly bites had me scratching all night. A squirt of Purell seemed to calm down the itch.

We left drizzly Nelson behind this morning and drove east to Picton. Our first stop was Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, whose location appeared in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It was a quick stop for a picture (no dwarves spotted) and then on to Havelock, the green mussel capital of the world. We ate quiche! 😉

The sun came out for Cullen Point Lookout, a short, cicada singing walk to a beautiful overlook of Pelorus and Mahau Sounds

Leaving the Cullen Point parking lot, we had our first driving mishap. Mitch didn’t see the cement parking median on the ground at the exit of the lot and drove right over it. After a few scraping and grinding sounds (and cursing from me), we thankfully cleared the structure without a major problem, but we drew an awkward stare from a few folks in the parking lot. Oops! Dumb Americans. Not to worry, it’s a rental and we are returning it today.

We then took the winding Queen Charlotte Drive, which hugged the coast, for a spectacular, picturesque drive to Picton. We have a chill day tomorrow before we set off on our four day Queen Charlotte hike on Monday.
