January 28
Today was a pretty chill day as we prepared for our first hike tomorrow, Queen Charlotte Track. We will be hiking 42 miles over 4 days in the Marlborough Sounds. We spent the morning packing and sorting our stuff, as we’re only allowed to bring a certain amount of weight. Fortunately for this hike, our gear is transported for us each day, so we only need to hike with our daypacks.
We then strolled around the port, popped back in to the office to ask a few more questions about the hike (they must think we’ve never hiked before!) and did one of my favorite pastimes every time we visit a new country: grocery shop! I love looking at all the different products that we don’t have in the U.S. and it’s fun to see our favorites from when we lived in London (lookin’ at you, chocolate digestives!). We also visited the Picton Whaling Museum and learned about the history of whaling and also some Māori history.
We ended the day at Sisu, a wonderful Finnish restaurant on the water. Sisu means stoic determination, bravery and resilience – apt words as we embark on our first Great Walk in New Zealand.
The descriptions and detail is so fantastic! I almost feel like I’m right there with you.
