Today’s planned hike of Mt John Summit got derailed due to 45 mph gale force winds. So I did laundry and ate a delicious mince (beef) pie from Fairlie Bakehouse instead. Not the planned start to the day, but productive nonetheless.
We were getting antsy sitting around the apartment, so we decided to go for a drive. We stopped along the way to Lake Pukaki outside the Tekapo military base for some photos and took a video, during which the gusts of winds nearly blew me away!
We headed further north to Lake Pukaki, a glacier lake in the heart of the Mackenzie Region. Again, that incredible turquoise blue water sparkled on the surface of the lake, even more so than Lake Tekapo. Lake Pukaki is 68 miles around, with an average depth of 154 feet. The lake has never frozen. The grounds of the visitor center provided us with some great photos and look what we have here.
Mt Cook Alpine Salmon! How lucky can one person be?! We bought some freshwater king salmon filets to cook at the apartment tomorrow. I can’t wait!
Peters Lookout was an amazing vantage point across to Mt Cook/Aoraki, the highest mountain in New Zealand at 12,217 ft. We’ll be making a visit there later in the week to go on a glacier tour and also a hike.
Tonight is our Dark Sky Project stargazing outing. We’re hoping it takes place because it is partly cloudy and still very windy, so hopefully it won’t be canceled since this is one of the main reasons we added Tekapo to the itinerary .
We won’t know if it’s a “go” or not until we check in at 9:30 p.m. tonight. We’re headed to dinner now at the Dark Sky Diner.
It’s gonna be a late night for us, so you’ll have to wait with bated breath until tomorrow to find out whether we went or not. Fingers crossed! 🌌
