Sandymount hike was an incredible start to our day. What began as a chilly, cloudy morning turned into a beautiful, partly sunny day with magical clouds.
We drove past hidden bays and dirt roads to find the trailhead. Along the drive we saw some new birds again and others we’ve already seen. Lots of sheep dotted the hillside and mountain tops.
The hike itself was not difficult, only two miles, but it took us a few hours because we stopped quite a few times to take it all in.
We began our walk through a tree tunnel, known as Macrocarpa trees, and ended up in a field of open farmland filled with tussock grass. We made our way to an overlook where we took lots of pictures of Hoopers Inlet, Allans Beach and the Peninsula. We met a friendly couple from Michigan and stopped to chat and trade tips once again. From there we continued on with our uphill hike over sand to the top of Sandymount where we descended through flax fields back to the car park.
All that hiking 🙂 made us hungry so we headed to Esplanade in nearby St Clair, a pizza and pasta place that was recommended by many people. We had a delicious lunch overlooking the South Pacific Ocean and wondered how in the world we would be hungry for dinner in four hours. Somehow we always seem to manage.
We dined at Plato for dinner — another excellent meal. We tried a new fish called Moki, which is a firm, white flesh fish found in the South Pacific. It’s been fun to try so many different kinds of fish and we have yet to eat one we haven’t liked. I can’t eat salmon every day, right?
