Rainbow over Otago Harbor

We did a big fat nothing on this drizzly Wednesday morning except look out our balcony window and see this iridescent rainbow over the harbor. We made a wish and then called and texted our friends back home whose birthdays were today (HBD Alon and Steve — Tomorrow it’s yours Grandma Roz! We hope you all enjoy celebrating).

Mitch caught up on some paperwork while I dozed off listening to a podcast, so I had to rewind it and listen all over again. Not the podcast’s fault, I was just really tired today for some reason. Every once in a while it’s nice to have an unstructured morning like today where we can just laze around and appreciate the down time.

We cancelled our dinner reservation at No 7 Balmac the first night we arrived in Dunedin due to heavy rain and exhaustion. We later learned that was a huge mistake and rebooked for lunch today. I’m so glad we did, because it now ranks as one of our favorite restaurants of the trip. If it’s good enough for Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, it’s good enough for us (they dined there several years ago when she was filming a movie in Dunedin).

After lunch we drove to Port Chalmers on the other side of the Otago Peninsula from where we’re staying. Port Chalmers serves as the main port of call for the city of Dunedin, with many cruise ships and freighters arriving on a weekly basis. Thankfully it wasn’t busy when we were there for our stroll around the quaint town. Only one ship was in port with about a 1,100 passengers but the town didn’t seem too busy.

After browsing the shops, we found a one lane dirt road along the harbor called Back Beach Road. We followed it for a few miles, took some cool photos and then headed back to our Airbnb.

At sunset, I enjoyed the view from the balcony. Mitch drove back to the end of the peninsula and visited the Royal Albatross Center to catch another glimpse of the incredible birds. On the drive home, he captured some nice pics as the sun was setting.

We have two tours tomorrow morning at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, a wildlife refuge and reserve.
