May 1
We received a text early this morning that our boat tour to Cathedral Cove was cancelled due to 8 ft swells. We rescheduled it for tomorrow.
Not having a back up plan, we had a leisurely start to the day. We decided to head towards the town of Tairua (“two tides”) about 30 minutes away. Tairua has a mild climate with annual temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees. We stopped for a great coffee and homemade pineapple muffin at Two Tides Bakery.
Directly opposite Tairua Harbor is the smaller town of Pauanui, (“big abalone”) our beach destination. Even though it seemed close over the harbor, it was still a 25 minute drive further. Since it was so windy, it wasn’t a great beach day, but it was decent enough for us to grab our towels and lay them down on a grassy area overlooking the water in an area we found sheltered from the breeze called Pleasant Point Reserve.
We were the only ones there apart from some dog walkers and fishermen hoping to catch their dinner from the pier.
We grazed on some snacks and listened to a podcast (Bone Valley – very good!). I fell asleep while listening, so once we were back in the car, we had to rewind so I could get caught up.
We popped to the grocery store on the way home to pick up some things to cook for dinner. Since we are checking out tomorrow morning, we packed up our things when we got back to the bach and had dinner.
Tomorrow, we head further south to Tauranga/Mount Maunganui after our tour.
