Sorry if I offend you Midwesterners but it wasn\u2019t too exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did run into one apparently traditional NZ roadblock that caused us a slight setback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Southern-Alps-Ka-Tiritiri-o-te-Moana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southern Alps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure again, I enjoyed my go-to lunch: smoked salmon salad, this time at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barkersfoodstore.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barker\u2019s<\/a>. We walked around and stretched our legs after our long drive, and then headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/int\/fairlie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairlie<\/a>, a town about 40 minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairliebakehouse.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairlie Bakehouse<\/a> came highly recommended by many locals and travel websites as THE place for savory pies. The line outside on Sunday afternoon at 3 pm was evidence of its popularity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped The scenery here is stunning. The glacier water is an incredible turquoise blue, basically glacier dust, that is made when the glaciers move down the mountains, grinding rocks as they go. The glacier then carries the rock dust down to the lake where the ice melts. The powder remains suspended in the lake water, giving it a turquoise hue. It\u2019s a shame the color can\u2019t be properly captured in the photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 href=\"https:\/\/www.darkskyproject.co.nz\/our-team-and-story\/dark-sky-reserve\/#:~:text=The%20Aoraki%20Mackenzie%20Dark%20Sky%20Reserve%20is%20one%20of%20the,Milky%20Way%20in%20beautiful%20clarity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve<\/a>. It\u2019s known as one of the best places in the world for star gazing because of its wide open vistas with no light pollution. At 10pm, we jumped in the car in our jammies and drove outside of town a few miles, away from town lights. The stars were amazing.
